can I check to make sure the builder is OK?
A. The Builder's Registration Board is a must to check (or whatever relevant authority is in your area.)

there a cooling off period when signing a building contract?
A. There is no cooling off - you must understand everything before
you sign.!
Q. Is
the initial deposit, paid when the preliminary agreement
is signed, refundable?
A. No, the deposit is non refundable.
Q. Can
I do some work myself?
A. Generally yes, but the builder will apply conditions.
Q. My
friend is an excellent bricklayer, can I get him to do the brickwork?
A. Generally yes, but the builder will apply conditions.
Q. Can
I supply some of my own materials and appliances?
A. Generally yes, but the builder will apply conditions. Insurance will also be a concern.
Q. Is
there a minimum warranty that must be given by the builder?
A. Yes, legislation provides a minium period for maintenance and
the structural integrity of the house. Check with your state building authority.
Q. Can
I make changes after building starts?
A. Some builders will allow this,
however it will be an expensive exercise - it pays to get everything
right before works commence.
Q. Is
there a Government Act specially to protect people building new
homes?
A. In Western Australia, the Home Building Contracts Act 1991 covers contracts $500,000
and under. Over that amount and you are on your own! Check with the relevant building authority in each state to find out what protections you have.
